Not all heroes have capes. They can’t always run faster than a speeding bullet or leap buildings in a single bound.
But they are always special.
Today I met a hero.
Her name is Maia, and I would love to introduce you to her.

Born March 23, 2006 with complex congenital heart defect (Unbalanced Atrial Ventricular Septal Defect with Coarctation of the Aorta). Maia’s first open-heart surgery was at 5 days old and came home at 5 weeks old. Her second surgery was at 6 months old where she suffered some complications and ended up in the hospital for a total of eight weeks. She was fed with a feeding tube for the first 11.5 months of her life, coming off to the surprise of many. She was developmentally delayed due to lengthy hospital stays and limited mobility from feeding tube and reflux issues. However she got back on target at approximately 2yrs 4months old. Due to her heart condition, she tires easily and has a compromised immune system which results in her becoming more severely sick for a given illness, which has resulted in many ER visits and a few extra overnight stays at the IWK. Maia is slated for her last scheduled open-heart surgery on June 23, 2009
